Side effects of food

Word on the street is that comedian Louis CK was the best act so far at this year's Edinburgh Festival. So here are some food-related gags from him.

Cake on Floor

Sadly, despite my deepest intentions & dearest wishes, I forgot to organise a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this month. Blast!

Back in the day I was a comedy groupie, and one of my fave comedians was Ross Noble, who made a few return trips to NZ to do psychedelic stream of consciousness rants that stood in stark relief next to the rehearsed routines of the other comedians.

Why just be funny when you can also incite civic unrest? (See sausage roll clips below)

Another tasty option for live buffoonery is the Glasgow Comedy Festival each April – some day I want to go there, and partake of the infamous Glasgow deep fried vegetarian haggis. Speaking of comedy.

Mr Potato Head

Satirical German magazine Titanic this week lampoons presidential candidate Christian Wulff by comparing him to a knödel dumpling. The headline reads: "Merkel's Recipe for a Crisis: Now a Knödel will become president."

The magazine has a history of food-related gags - publishing caricatures of former chancellor Kohl's head as a pear in the '80s. They spoofed East German's obsession with bananas following the fall of the wall, with the cover depicting an Easterner holding her "first banana" which is in fact a cucumber.

vomiting pumpkins

(sorry, I forgot where I downloaded the above image from, or somebody emailed it to me... it's a long time ago...)

It's too early for Halloween, but since Maytel cued vomiting...

It seems like more than a few people think pumpkins are great vomiting subjects.

The two vomiting pumpkins above are from Extreme Pumpkins.

Below is another favorite of mine, also lost the source, somebody emailed it to me a long time ago.

Neuroses, diets, and bargain-hunting

For further proof of why Lynn Yaeger (and by association, the Village Voice) is brilliant:

Read Yaeger's column on cheap coats and a creepy new dieting recipe book.

I can't believe there is a book called Skinny Bitch in the Kitch! haha!

Now your favourite neurosis follows in the footsteps of TIGI haircare and a swathe of American drinks and packaged goods to come bottled with FUN gumdrop-style slogans like 'PMS' - Pissy Mood Snacks.

Someone to Eat Cheese With

....Starring my favourite lady in the whole wide world.....Sahra Silverman (as a chubbychaser)...Amy Sedaris...and apparently in association with the Curb Your Enthusiasm people. It's coming to a screen near you.

Perhaps a new romantic comedy that won't make you want to puke...?

Mixing It Up

Aw, rats!

Yes and at the risk of stating the obvious, how awesome does this 'Ratatouille' movie seem? I can't wait to see it. It will be the best thing since 'Ants'.

[from trailer]
Remy: What is that?
Remy's Brother Emile: [Looks at the odd thing he is eating]
Remy's Brother: I don't really know.
Remy: You don't know, and you're eating it.
Emile: You know, if you can sort of muscle your way past the gag reflex, all kinds of food possibilities open up.
Remy: [to the screen] This is what I'm talking about.

From the subheading it seems Mr. Bird may have read the Time magazine article about restaurants being the new sweatshops.

Not only does the main character's voice remind me of David Schwimmer (whose brilliance cannot be denied), one of my favourite actresses Janeane Garafalo is in the movie and she says it is her favourite movie she's ever done. Quelle horreur!
Here is a description of her character:
"After many years in a male-dominated profession, Colette is a tough cookie. A talented and ambitious chef, she doesn't appreciate having to look after Linguini but is there a soft center under that hard exterior?"

Can't get enough of those cheesy puns! Cheesy! Get it??

Peter O'Toole is also in the film as the voice of 'Antono Ego': the ultimate food critic and feared by everyone in the world of cuisine. He is known as 'The Grim Eater'.

Then there is Auguste Gusteau, a world-famous chef who mysteriously died after his highly-regarded restaurant was downgraded from five stars to four by Anton Ego.

You could also watch
this video review by A.O.Scott.
He calls it the best work of populist culture he's seen in a long time or something like that.

By the way, the movie is set in Paris. I have some Paris food blogging on the way for y'all.

Food/Juice Comedy

Okay so Maytel has been hassling me to post something, even though ive been busy :-/ So here's a start, Dave Chappelle and food/difference between juice and drink... enjoy :)

Dr Bread with Conan

I miss good bread. Bread makers in Thailand follow the general conception that the whiter, sweeter and spongier the better. I call it Japanese-style bread. Cambodian bread is marginally better, it has a crust at least. Overall I've noticed that in keeping with the southeast asian general perception that anything dark is bad and anything white and fair is good, one almost never sees a well baked loaf of rye bread. My step-mother has taken the asian browned bread phobia to a whole new level. As she believes that anything slightly burnt contains cancer causing carcinogens, after toasting her bread in the morning she then proceeds to pick off any pieces that fall above the hue of honey coloured. It is a painful sight to see

I miss vogels and crusty loaves of ciabatta.

small bananas!

Japanese is a great language for making food puns...something to do with how it's composed of syllabic units which are easily re-combined or re-emphasised... silly stuff but oh so fun!

Otsu-katsu-kare-sama
Combines the word used to salute/big up yourself or other people when they finish work (otsukaresama) with the words for pork-cutlet-with-curry (katsu kare). I made this one up of course, because so stupid.

Shou ga nai
Means 'oh well, nothing can be done about it'... say it when you have run out of ginger. (shouga nai = no ginger)

Keiki dayo!!
Means 'It's finished!'. Say it when you just finished making a cake. (sounds like 'It's cake!!')

Uma ii
In kids or slang style means 'horse is good'. Say when eating horse sashimi, because it sounds like the word for delicious (umai)

Hashitsurei shimashita
Hashi: chopsticks; shitsurei shimashita: excuse me (for what I did)
Meaning: Excuse me for dropping food from my chopsticks.

also got a couple in German, one which I made up:
Kleine banahnung!
(The second word is a combo of 'bananen' - bananas and 'ahnung' - idea, so you're saying 'Small bananas!' when you really mean 'No idea!'/ keine ahnung!)

From Torsten comes:
Cervelats wurst!
Cervelats wurst is a type of salami, and to Tor it sounds like 'servus!' which means ciao/thanks/cheers/see ya. So he often says 'cervelatswurst' instead of 'servus'.
