After work drinks

Most chefs need a drink after work.

If you are wondering why. Ritchie explains.

While a good 800 people line up to get into our work place after our dinner service.

We the cooks can't wait to get the hell out.

Usually staff drinks are held in front of the local 7-11 but thanks to Chef Shaggy and Chef Dan we have found the delights of frozen beer.

I know when you come come to Thailand you think it is cool to drink the local beers but trust me they are shit.

As shit as Heineken. So freezen the contents only adds to the pleasure. Especially as we build up to the end of the hot/dry season.

It's really hot here.

Bring on Songkran.

Pocari SWEAT

Now that I started mentioning Japanese beverage, I just cannot help but bringing up the infamous Pocari Sweat, also by Otsuk seiyaku.

... which I think is probably fairly well-known in the world of Japangrish product.
I don't know how the Japanese beverage industry has gotten into the category of drinks that almost looks like a big joke.

Here's one from Dydo Drinco.

It is a word joke... "Ochou fujin" is this blond hair character which appeared in the "Ace wo Nerae", a late-70's cartoon in which high school tennis club members compete to each other.

In the cartoon, this blond woman's name is "Ochou fujin" meaning "Madame Butterfly." This Dydo's drink, which is prune juice supposedly good for regularity, is named "Ochou fujin", meaning "Madame Intestine."
Both "butterfly" and "intestine" has the same pronunciation, "chou", though they use the different kanji (Chinese character).

Even though they still have the press release, they unfortunately no longer sell this hilarious product... maybe constipated customers didn't feel comfortable taking the "Madame Intestine" drinks to the cashier.
It was sold by Otsuka Seiyaku in Japan from 2000 to 2003.

The TV commercial below takes place at a Japanese "snack" where people speak Osaka dialect...

Apparently they were trying to target the middle-aged "salary men"... to get the rigor like that of Maasai warriors...

Chili: the perfect drug

Doctors are dripping capsaicin, the chemical that gives chili peppers their fire, directly into open wounds during some highly painful operations.

These experiments use an ultra-purified version of capsaicin to avoid infection -- and the volunteers are under anesthesia so they don't scream at the initial burn...

The hope is that bathing surgically exposed nerves in a high enough dose will numb them for weeks, so that patients suffer less pain and require fewer narcotic painkillers as they heal.

"We wanted to exploit this numbness," is how Dr. Eske Aasvang, a pain specialist in Denmark who is testing the substance, puts it.

I love the idea that the cure for blinding pain is higher doses of blinding pain.

To be used inplace of a bloody mary mixer

INGREDIENTS
3 cucumbers, peeled and cut into small pieces
2 red onions peeled and quartered
1/2 jalapeno pepper
1 bunch spring onions
4 green bell peppers stems removed and quartered
4 celery ribs washed and cut into 1 inch pieces
1 bunch Italian Basil washed and stems removed
2 Tab Chlorophyll powder
1 Tab Ginger root Cleaned, skin-off and finely chopped
salt & pepper to taste
2 Tab Lime Juice Add more or less to taste

METHOD: Combine small batches of vegetables in a food processor and puree until smooth. When all the vegetables are pureed, place in a large container and cover with 3 litres of water. Let the mix stand refrigerated for 1 hour. In 1-quart batches, puree and strain the mix. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper, lemon juice, and lime juice. Serve in a large glass jug. Drink either on its own, or with liberal amounts of tequila or vodka. Goes fantastically with oysters and crab.

Chlorophyll powder is a powerful detoxifier - which helps to purge heavy metals from your system, its great for smokers or people who live in smoggy cities.

Tequila is a powerful intoxifier - which helps you to forget about everything you did whilst drinking it, its great for people who suffer from stress, or those who suffer from photographic memory disorders.
